Why Read an eBook?

I still buy real books. I do. I admit it. However, I do mostly buy eBooks now. I have a Kindle…but honestly, I read mostly on my phone. There are so many reasons I’ve made the switch.

For one, my bookcases are full to overflowing. As I sit here in this room typing, there are four large bookcases stuffed with books. That is just in this room. There are bookcases in the other bedroom, the living room AND the dining room. There are books in plastic storage containers under my bed and in my closet. There are crates full of books all over my home. I have … a lot of books. I just don’t physically have the room for more.

However, there are other good reasons too. I have a number of cookbooks in electronic format. It is great to look up ingredients I need while I’m at the store. If I’m stuck in line at the post office, I just whip out the phone and do some reading. I have reference materials at my fingertips. Lastly, the selection online is much better. When I moved to this town, there were two real book stores. There was a Waldenbooks in the mall and a stand-alone Borders. Both are now gone. The only places to buy books are Walmart, Target and the grocery store. No offense, but the selection is quite limited.

Did I switch to eBooks to save trees? Not specifically. I do other things … cutting down on packaging, recycling (even though it isn’t required where I live), buying in bulk, bringing my own bags etc. However, I’m a happy ebook convert. If trees get saved, that’s a nice bonus.

What do you like about eBooks?

  1. Malia, I’ve quickly become addicted to reading on my Kobo and the ebooks I get there. The variety is amazing, I get to support fellow e-authors and it’s just so fun. Continued success to you!

  2. My love eBooks start with my nook (a personal joke from my husband for Valentines day cause of the naughty books I read… LoL…) but I currently upgraded to the iPad…
Email following you and have enjoyed reading some of your books.

Take care and best of luck to you

  3. I love ebooks and my Kindle(s), it´s a great way to find deals on books and to be able to read excerpt from authors you´re interested in. And it´s sooo easy LOL if you read as much as I do, this is the ultimate thing, no more 3-4 books in your purse, instead a Kindle with (almost) limitless library *happy sigh*
Thanks for the giveaway & Happy Friday!

Love my Nook HD ,i told my husband that wanted to save the tress and have more room.so i got rid of paperbacks and hardcovers. love ebook i can check out COOL AUTHORS!

  5. I love e-books for a lot of reasons most of which you have listed, I also love that with my Kindle I can read my book no matter what device is near me be it my phone, my kindle or my computer and I don’t have to weigh down my purse carrying my book everywhere. Thanks Carin

  6. Since my house looks like a paper mill exploded, I appreciate the space-saving! Also, it’s nice to find shorter works and one-offs that wouldn’t get much exposure in print…

  7. I definitely prefer ebooks these days. I love my Nook for reading. But I also have a tablet for reading Kindle books. I like being able to read one handed and still be able to get things done. 🙂

I like ebooks because I can carry a whole library around with me. Thanks for the giveaway! cheryllynne(at)rocketmail(dot)com

  9. I still buy books too. I love my print books. It’s so nice to have certain stories in my hand. But like you space is a bit of an issue. I did just buy to bookcases to remedy some of my overflow. And really all that’s going to do is encourage me to buy more books!

I too, have a kindle and love it as well. It’s nice to be able to get access to a lot of different indie authors. Also I read going to and from work and it’s nice to have access to different genres of books at the ready instead of carrying around 4 different books. (And yes I did do that!)

    Thanks!

  10. So many great comments – keep them coming! I totally forgot about availability. That is huge! Many things have been re-released and only available electronically. Short stories and novella and such – those are perfect for ebook and shunned by trad pub. Electronic publishing has also provided a home to orphan mid-list authors!

  11. I love ebooks because they don’t make my back hurt from carrying them around (I can carry a whole library with me) and I can get them in my PJ’s. LOL I can read all the erotic books I want without anyone making any snide comments about my reading material. (Not that I really care.) Thanks for being part of the hop and for the chance to win.

Ever since I received my Nook ereader (the original one) I have not been able to put it down, when that one started messing up I got the NookColor! I am a total fan, plus with all of the paperbacks and hardcovers I already have it totally saves me a lot of space!

I stilll buy real books, but my Kindle is my go everywhere book. I have it with me at all times because it fits in my purse and I can take it out with ease and read a few pages and return it to my purse. How else can you fit 600 books in your purse??

  14. My favorite place to buy books was Borders, which of course is gone. We have a Barnes down the street, but I’m just not comfortable there. And I love the immediacy of ebks. If I want the book at 2am, BAM! there it is. I still buy print books for autobuy authors, but my 1-Click finger gets a mighty work out

  15. I love my Kindle because I dont have to worry about getting a paper cut, a page falling out after reading the book over and over, no wear and tear on it. I can highlight a line with a double tap of my finger. ALL my favorites stories fit into my purse and can oull them out whenever I need.

I read on my I-Pod, and I like that I always have it with me and can pull it out of my purse anytime I have a few minutes to read.

Ebooks are the way to go! I rarely buy print copies anymore. I have hundreds of them on my Nook. It goes with me everywhere. I’m always with a book. Oh yes!

  18. You can buy and read them right away

    bn100candg at hotmail dot com

  19. I like how fast I can get them. Instant gratification is a wonderful thing. But I have to say I miss looking at a bookshelf full of beautiful covers. I have a Kindle model that doesn’t showcase the covers in the library, you have to click the book to see the cover =(

  20. I love my e-readers because I always have an entire library with me no matter where I am. I also love all the free e-books and being able to find new indie writers who are only publishing in e-format. It certainly doesn’t stop me from buying printed books, but the readers go with me everywhere.

  21. I love my kindle fire because I can take tons (I have over 1200 on there now) with me where ever I go!! great post! 🙂 mygirls01(@)yahoo.com

  22. I read ebooks because i can make the print larger so i dont strain my eyes. I just started to have to wear glasses to read and i dislike them alot.

  23. I like the convenience and immediacy of e-books–if I want it, I can get it and be reading almost immediately! And no worrying about whether the book might get mangled in transit!

  24. I love books and have a hard time getting rid of them (bookshelves overflowing). But now I have a kindle and I can’t leave home without it. LOL I recently moved near the water and now my books are getting damaged by all the humidity. So nature has forced my hand and cleaned up my home. I donated almost everything I had to my neighborhood library.

  25. I love ebooks and have almost completely made the transition. I love the instant gratification when buying and the fact that there’s virtually no storage space involved.

    joderjo402 AT gmail DOT com

  26. I love ebooks for the instant gratification. No need to have to go out to buy the book or wait for it to be delivered. I read about a book I want to read, instant download 🙂 How else can you buy a new book at 3 am from your bed when you can’t sleep? LOL

  27. I used to own tons of books, but my husband’s job requires us to move every year or two. Having all my books on the Kindle makes packing a lot simpler. Most importantly, I can reread my favorites whenever I want : – )

I like that my husband can’t actually know how many books i have… Lol I have tons of paperbacks and with ebooks i don’t have be like uhhhh Yeah i bought 5 books today lol.

    j.m.platt83@gmail.com

  29. I find that I am buying ebooks more because I am finding more new authors and I really don’t have a lot of space left in my bookshelves. Now I do still by paperbacks for the series that I already have them in, but otherwise, it’s ebooks.

  30. I like them for all of the reasons that you noted. I have books hidden all over my house. There is definitely not enough room.
Also, I have a 3 year old, who liked to rip the pages of my books before I bought my Kindle. I do tend to read both, but I prefer ebooks. 🙂
    Great hop!

  32. I like ebooks more. I love the thought of being able to carry all my favorites everywhere with me. And the storage part..awesome! lol Thank you!

  34. I love the affordability of ebooks. Here in Australia a simple paperback can cost anything from $12 to $21, whilst an ebook is usually always under the $10 (unless it’s a big name bestseller). I also love the fact that I’m not stuffing the house with more books. I find it hard passing books on so there they sit. Gathering dust alot of the time 😀
