My New Year’s Memory

I’ve had to think long and hard about a favorite New Year’s memory. I don’t usually do up this holiday much and in my family it tends to be a day for rest, relaxation and recovery from the earlier holidays.

However, I do have some interesting memories regarding my first New Year’s in Hawaii. I moved here from New York. Yes, the city. The ball dropping, the huge celebration, the whole thing. I will admit that in fifteen years of living in NYC, I never once, ever went to Times Square for the celebration. Cold and crowded was all I ever thought when I considered it, though I’m sure many people had an enjoyable time.

In Hawaii, things are a bit different. One major difference is fireworks are legal. I never lived anywhere before where they were. Not only is some pretty major firepower available at your local grocery, bringing in illegal aerials and such is big business here. They bring them in by the container load.

People don’t even really wait for New Year’s. From a couple days before to a couple days after, the sound and smoke of fireworks fills the air.

Now I’ll admit, the first time it was rather interesting. I never had blown up so much cool stuff before. I’m a closet pyro at heart I guess.

He brushed her lips with his. “Mmmm, you’d better point me to a flat surface.”

Her hand fluttered in the direction of the hallway and she gasped as he swept his arm under her knees and picked her up. His legs covered the distance quickly, and it barely seemed a blink before they were in her bedroom.

Lights from the street bathed the room in a slight glow and Rogan laid her on the coverlet. He smoothed her hair back from her face and climbed onto the mattress beside her.

“Mia,” he whispered, “tell me what happens in your fantasy.”

She smiled as she remembered the dream details. “You take off my clothes, though you’ve taken care of most of them.”

“I’m happy to oblige.” He reached for her bra, unhooked the front fastener and loosened the cups, revealing smooth, creamy skin. He pushed the straps off her shoulders and she sat up a bit so she could pull out her arms.

Mia eyed his shirt. “It hardly seems fair that you’re wearing so much.”

“You’re right.” He stood by the bed and her eyes drank him in while he removed the rest of his uniform. Button by button, he opened his shirt exposing a well-muscled chest with more than just a sprinkling of dark, coarse hair.
