A healthy imagination is an important part of helping us cope with the stresses of everyday life and a source of entertainment and creativity. However, most of us can identify the line between fantasy and reality. While we might enjoy watching James Bond or Jason Bourne, we have no real desire to be on the run or exposed to violence.
This is just as true when we look at our sexual fantasies. Millions of people have purchased 50 Shades of Gray. If you read it and enjoy it, does it mean you want to be Ana? Of course not. It means the reader found it entertaining or perhaps arousing. It would be a mistake to assume that because something is titillating, one might actually want to pursue it. There are many things that one might think and imagine but not want to actually experience.
This distinction between fantasy and reality is particularly important in the erotica genre. I have written stories that contain light BDSM, female domination, spanking and all manner of sexual activities. However, they are complete fantasy created for the entertainment of a reader.
One of my more popular books is Mia’s Cop Craving. It is the story of a woman who has a persistent sexual fantasy that focuses on police officers. She finally decides to pursue the fulfillment of this fantasy and finds her own personal hot cop. In the story, everything works out terrific and reality surpasses Mia’s fantasy.
Actually turning fantasy into reality can be a tricky business. Issues of safety must be addressed and everything should always be safe, sane and consensual. What happens if the fantasy is better than the reality? There is also the issue of personal exposure. Our fantasies can reveal our deepest, most private thoughts. These are not easily shared.
So, I encourage everyone to exercise the imagination. It is a great place to gestate new ideas and goals. Select the ones you truly want to pursue and make them happen. But feel completely comfortable in allowing some of your thoughts to remain right where they are — in your mind.

Mia squirmed a little on her stool. “Well, I’m not usually. But it seemed like a way to ingratiate myself with you.” Mia hoped a more direct route wasn’t going to scare him off.
He laughed. “Really? There are a lot of men here. I was just daydreaming in my beer.”
“I’ll be honest. I saw you when I came in and, well, I thought to myself, he’s the one.”
“The one? The one for what?”
“Let me ask you this first. Any wife? Girlfriend?”
“No . . .”
“Okay, well. Oh, do you go for girls?”
He laughed again. “Yes, I’m heterosexual. This is getting more and more interesting.”
“Okay, well, you see. I have this thing. I’ve had this thing. This dream. About cops or rather a cop.”
“Oh?” He looked genuinely interested.
Mia tapped her fingers in the bar. “Yes, and well, I decided to act on it.”
“Go on.”
“It’s a rather . . . err . . . sexy sort of dream.” Mia was sure if she saw her face it would be flushed.
“Oh, this I’d like to hear.”
She picked up her beer and took a swig for courage. “Well, I meet a cop . . . a police officer. Handsome like you. Ummm . . . sexy . . . like you.” She paused, unsure how to continue.
He gestured that she should continue.
“He and I . . . we hit it off so to speak.”
“Kinda like now?”
“Oh yes. And well . . . it leads to all sorts of . . . things.” She fidgeted on the hard stool.
“Things?”
“Well, yes, you know. They . . . I mean we . . . that is in the dream. My dream.”
“Sweetheart, are you trying to pick me up?”
“Yes, I guess I am and failing miserably.” Her shoulders slumped.
“No you’re not. Failing that is. Not many guys would say no when a beautiful woman comes on to them.”
“Oh.” Mia felt her embarrassment fade away.
“So, in your dream, how did the couple meet?”
“I don’t know. It skips that part.”
“Oh really? Where does it start?” He smiled, encouraging her to continue.
“It usually starts at . . . ah . . . an intimate moment.”
“Okay, this is sounding interesting.”
Mia hesitated a moment and then took the plunge. “Would you like to walk with me? You know . . . outside?” She gestured toward the door.
He considered it for a moment. “Okay, but only if you promise to tell me more about this dream of yours.” He took some money from his wallet and tossed it on the bar. He picked up his beer and drained the last bit before guiding Mia toward the exit.
