Jonah sipped from his cup. “This coffee is better than usual. What did you do?”

Jonah placed his cup on the counter. “I usually just dump the old coffee.”

“Yes?” She paused. “Jonah?” She drew his name out on her tongue.

“This.” He gestured toward her. “Is this about yesterday?”

Anna wasn’t sure where to go with her plan. “Yesterday?” She feared her manner gave the impression of stupid instead of coy.

“Yes, yesterday. We had a moment, for lack of a better term. Is this some game?”

Anna straightened. “Game? What is that supposed to mean?” Her voice lost its teasing edge.

“It means that either you are trying to needle me or maybe … maybe you want something?”

Anna frowned. “Those are the only two explanations?”

Jonah considered for an instant. “Anna, you’re not interested in me, are you?”

Anna thumped her mug on the counter. “Of course not.” Color rose in her face.

“Anna, about yesterday. I didn’t mean to be unprofessional.” His apologetic manner unnerved her.

“You were not unprofessional,” Anna bit out. What a disaster. Was he going to say something kind? Anna didn’t think she could bear the embarrassment.

Jonah took her hand lightly in his. Her hand trembled, and Anna was sure he felt it. “Are you afraid?” He looked into her eyes. “Or aroused?”

Anna swayed as his calloused thumb stroked her palm. The lab seemed to shrink, the walls gathering close around them.

He tugged on her hand, bringing to his lips. He nipped her fingertip.

Remember the Archangels’ mission? Satan has found a loophole in the rules that govern his battle against Good. The Archangel Uriel sends twelve Warrior Archangels to Earth on a mission to even the odds.

Each Archangel has one month to find a couple, unite them, and use their union’s power to create the Holy Warriors needed to defend the world against Satan’s unholy creations.

But the mission isn’t so simple when inheriting Humanity comes with challenges beyond the Angel’s training, and every milestone in the couple’s relationship effects the triumvirate’s strength.

Kassern and Dorn have finished forming their triumvirates—oh wait, back up a minute—make that quadumvirates. Here’s a tiny little taste of Toren, just to whet your appetite:

Toren has just shaved his head because he had to shave part of Sam’s hair away to treat a burn she received saving a newborn calf in a burning barn. Sam pretended cutting all her hair short meant nothing, but he knows it did. So he shows his understanding.

Sam was suddenly at a weird loss for words while standing there in the hallway feeling like she owed the man something more than her damn sarcasm. “Come here.”

She walked ahead to the bathroom and looked back to ensure he followed, bristling at herself for the crass command like he was some subservient dog. Hell she didn’t talk to animals in the tone she used with him.

He followed with a slight smile and she wondered what was going through that beautiful hairless head of his. She opened the bathroom door and turned on the light, then got the stool from next to the tub and set it in front of the mirror. “You missed a few spots.” She cleared her throat a little trying to soften her voice. “If you don’t mind…I’d like to get them for you.”

She fought to hold his gaze and not get all dizzy. Such beautiful eyes. Eyes that bore into hers without hesitation or inhibition. Bold and demanding. Devouring even. She released a breath when he broke eye contact but then he removed his shirt in one move. Lordy help her.

Now she didn’t know where to look. Not meeting his gaze meant staring at his chest. Damn she’d never been so torn. His gaze, meet his gaze.

When she did, she forgot what the hell she was supposed to be doing. She closed her eyes, focusing.

“You okay?” Deep voice. Small space. Intimate as hell.

“I’m fine.” Still not looking. “Just um. Thinking. Sit. Please.”

“Yes ma’am.”

Sam stared at the back of his perfect head and had the sense to get the razor. “Can’t have you halfass shaving your head now can I?”

“No ma’am.” His tone vibrated through her womanly parts.

“Whooowee, hot in this little box, told them they needed to put a damn window.” She stroked his scalp looking for those spots she’d seen. No sooner had her fingers touched his head than she got lost in the feel of him. So damn soft. Wow. She turned on the hot water and stood to his right and slowly ran the razor over his head. She methodically repeated the steps in a pattern to make sure she got every spot, pretending his head was just another animal she was shearing.

Finally done, she wet her hands and passed them over his head to make sure she got it all. He made a sound that resembled maybe a moan or a pained grunt and her fingers slowed. “Irritating?”

“Hell no.”

Her heart skipped several beats then raced to catch up. He turned his head and looked up at her. She removed her hands from his head, realizing she was done and had no legitimate reason to keep them there. He reached for one of her hands and before she realized what he was doing, he rubbed her palm across his chest. Drying it. She couldn’t take her eyes from his as he slid it slowly over his hard muscles. Warm muscles. She couldn’t keep from pressing her fingers either, to feel him. The man was damn immaculate. Very nice for touching. And hell, tasting.

He stood up and she was suddenly swallowed by his towering frame. The man was…huge. Dangerous in so many ways. Especially those eyes right in that second. Hooded with…sex appeal.

“Thank you.”

She blinked several times at his strange words. “Thank you?” Whatever for? For touching him? For liking him? For wanting him? Wanting him to kiss her? In that very second? She wondered if he could read her mind with the way he suddenly stared at her mouth, contemplating. She licked her lips, oh my God, why? To entice? Yes, definitely. It worked.

He slowly lowered his head, his brows drawn, his aim her mouth. She parted her lips, waiting for it. To be kissed. She closed her eyes and then opened them when his warm breath seemed to increase next to her lips. His brows were drawn hard, like something hurt.

Worried he’d not do it, she reached up and stroked her fingers across his face. Then tip-toed and closed the distance, pressing her lips into his full soft ones.

A guttural sound filled his throat and the next second he captured her face and neck in one large hand and plundered the hell out of her mouth with his skillful tongue. Sam inhaled as he boldly and hungrily invaded her, telling her just what he wanted from her. All and everything, right in that second.

His other hand was on the buttons of her shirt when Kassie’s scream pierced the air. “Shit!” Sam gasped and reluctantly pulled back with a moan that told of years of unmet need.

“Glory is delivering now!” Kassie screamed from the bottom of the stairs.

“Oh no!”

“What?” Toren demanded.

“My horse. She’s a rogue. She’s genuinely tried to kill every human that gets within reach.”

Toren flew down the stairs after her and they both ran to the barn.

“I know you’re not seeking any romantic connections right now, Everly,” Wyatt interrupted, giving Cole a quelling look. “We’re here in a strictly professional capacity.”

Now she looked more at ease. “I see. Are you seeking a consultation over Cole’s rotator cuff injury?”

Cole stiffened. He glared at Wyatt.

“I haven’t told her a thing,” Wyatt said with raised palms.

“You didn’t have to say anything,” she said with a shrug, leaning back against Rowan’s desk. Her keen gaze met Cole’s. “I noticed that you favored your left hand throughout your meal, using it to drink, eat, and bring your napkin to your mouth, but you’re a right-handed pitcher. And just now, when you moved to clear space on the couch, you stopped breathing and swallowed hard when you moved your right arm, telling me you’re hiding pain and have a reduced range of motion.”

His mouth opened over her observations. He looked again at Wyatt. His brother gave him a look that said, See?

“But how do you know it’s a rotator cuff injury?” Cole asked. Could other people see what she did? If so, he was so screwed.

“That, I’ll admit, was an educated guess based on your age and profession,” she answered. “I’ve only observed your symptoms and haven’t done any scans or tests to confirm. You’ll want to rule out bursitis, tendonitis, adhesive capsulitis, and other possible causes of your shoulder pain, of course.”

Despite what he’d seen this evening and his brother’s assurances, Cole was surprised by Everly’s quick assessment. She looked like she should be out club-hopping, not spouting medical jargon with such an intent expression on her face.

He also realized, since she knew his profession, that she had known who he was the moment she saw him. So why hadn’t she mentioned that before now? Maybe she wasn’t a fan.

“We’ve had scans done,” Wyatt said. “X-rays, an MRI—the whole load.”

He moved over to the desk. Everly stepped to the side as Wyatt reached over to retrieve the large manila envelope resting there. She hit Cole’s leg and nearly toppled onto his lap. Out of instinct, he reached out to help her maintain her balance. His hands ended up on her nicely shaped rear end.

She sprang away like a gazelle fleeing a lion. When she turned to look at him, he realized her cheeks were nearly as red as her hair. Her reaction went a long way toward putting him back on an even keel.

“I don’t bite,” he said with a grin. “Come and have a seat.”

He patted the cushion beside him. She looked at it warily, then moved her gaze to him. He patted the cushion again. Her lips moved on a whispered comment of some kind as she stepped around his legs and sat down. It was a small victory, but he felt better.

When he turned to look at her, he caught her scent, a unique fragrance that reminded him of whipped vanilla cream and frosted wildberries. She met his gaze. The combination of her nearness, her scent, and the cautious look in her lovely eyes had his whole body reacting.

Oh, this was such a bad idea.

Jonah sipped from his cup. “This coffee is better than usual. What did you do?”

“I washed out the pot and filter?” Anna laughed and threw her braid back over her shoulder. Wasn’t playing with hair supposed to be a flirty thing to do? She glanced into Jonah’s eyes and saw his pupils dilate ever so slightly.

Jonah placed his cup on the counter. “I usually just dump the old coffee.”

Anna reached to top him off, making sure she grazed him again. She turned and put the coffee pot back in its place. Her hip bumped him.

“Anna?” he asked in a deep, questioning tone.

“Yes?” She paused. “Jonah?” She drew his name out on her tongue.

His eyes locked with hers. “What’s this about?”

Anna broke eye contact as his scrutiny became too intense. “What’s what about?”

“This.” He gestured toward her. “Is this about yesterday?”

Anna wasn’t sure where to go with her plan. “Yesterday?” She feared her manner gave the impression of stupid instead of coy.

“Yes, yesterday. We had a moment, for lack of a better term. Is this some game?”

Anna straightened. “Game? What is that supposed to mean?” Her voice lost its teasing edge.

“It means that either you are trying to needle me or maybe … maybe you want something?”

Anna frowned. “Those are the only two explanations?”

Jonah considered for an instant. “Anna, you’re not interested in me, are you?”

Anna thumped her mug on the counter. “Of course not.” Color rose in her face.

“Anna, about yesterday. I didn’t mean to be unprofessional.” His apologetic manner unnerved her.

“You were not unprofessional,” Anna bit out. What a disaster. Was he going to say something kind? Anna didn’t think she could bear the embarrassment.

Jonah took her hand lightly in his. Her hand trembled, and Anna was sure he felt it. “Are you afraid?” He looked into her eyes. “Or aroused?”

Anna swayed as his calloused thumb stroked her palm. The lab seemed to shrink, the walls gathering close around them.

He tugged on her hand, bringing to his lips. He nipped her fingertip.

Anna struggled to remain impassive as her blood surged. She sensed she hadn’t fooled Jonah with her imperfect façade of calm.

Jonah slid his hands from her shoulders to her waist. He grasped her, his fingers digging into her flesh. His breath fanned her ear. “Yes. I can’t resist what’s between us. I don’t want to.”

Anna closed her eyes and savored his attention. Her heart swelled with love and hope. She wanted to sink into him, but her natural caution hadn’t evaporated completely.

I, myself, have attended about three billion weddings in my lifetime, give or take a few zeros, and I’ve learned that weddings are only about as fun as my attitude. Sure, there are a few that couldn’t be saved if I brought my own live band and mini-bar but, for the most part, I try to make my own fun.  I do this by following a set of rules that I’ve carefully crafted over the years, and by carrying a trusty wedding first aid kit to get me through those survival mode situations.

Wedding Attendance Rules:

Leave the ego at home. If the bride and groom want you to do the chicken dance, the conga, the electric slide or *shudder* sing a love song to get them to kiss (why I want to see them kiss is beyond me), these activities are a hell of a lot more fun when you don’t care that you look like a fucking idiot.

Don’t spend all of your time with just one close knit group of people. Mingle and get other guests mingling. A wedding is way more fun when people are interacting with each other.

Pretend you love everyone. Even that bitch at table twelve who ditched you on a girl’s night out three years ago just because she met a Jim Morrison look-a-like.

Don’t attempt to drink your weight in alcohol at the open bar.

Wedding Attendance Survival Kit:

Safety pins

Safety pins are a must for those little mishaps, like a dress or bra strap ripping while you’re doing the electric slide or funky chicken.

Travel sized hair spray

Dual use, folks! Not only will it help you cement that up do, it fights static cling. Simply apply as you would with anti-static spray.

Clear nail polish

Stops nylons from running. Simply apply the moment you notice a snag.

Spare nylons

You will need these if you don’t catch that snag until it’s running up your leg.

Ballerina flats

Mine come folded into a handy, sparkly little zippered pouch. If you simply cannot stand another moment in those stilettos, or a heel or strap snaps, these are the perfect replacement.

Pashmina, scarf or pretty shawl

This will alter the look of your outfit if you’re caught in the same dress as another attendee. Also, when drunk uncle Herman spills his scotch on your dress, you’ll be glad you have something to cover it up. I once had to wrap one around my waist like a belt so it would cover a huge red wine stain on my thigh. To my surprise, everyone complimented my ensemble.

These are the basic behavioural guidelines and first aid items that I would suggest women bring to a wedding or any high-end function. Of course, if none of this works, and you still find yourself having a disastrous time, you can always do what my mother and I do in case of emergency; we share a joint. It’s more or less legal in Canada and it doesn’t take much to get us feeling a little silly because we are drug-free the rest of the year. Well, except when we visit my great aunt Shirley but trust me, that situation requires some mind-altering assistance. Even my grandmother pops a couple Valium in preparation for that visit.

The Wedding

Karen is not the type to attend a wedding with a guy she’s only slept with once but, in a rare display of empathy, she agrees to accompany her new landlord Allen to this sure-to-be-boring function. Fortunately, Karen knows how to have a good time, and she’s pretty sure she and Allen can make their own fun…even if they have to do it in the outdoors just steps away from a couple hundred stuffy wedding guests.

The Wedding, mini-excerpt:

The car rumbled to life and he pulled from the roundabout into traffic. He seemed at ease, his hand alternately resting on my thigh and the shifter. As we neared our destination, however, his comfort steadily dissipated.  His fingers tapped against the wheel and he smoothed his other hand along the thigh of his dress pants. Jesus, I hope he’s not going to act like this all night. There better be an open bar.

“So, uh, like I said,” he said finally. “My ex-best friend and his wife won’t be there.”

“Uh huh,” I said, distracted. Who doesn’t have an open bar at a wedding these days? No one, that’s who. God, I hope the champagne is good. I need an overflowing glass of expensive champagne, like, ten minutes ago. Since when does Karen Valentine go to weddings as someone’s date?
