Malia Mallory Presents Five Tips for the Perfect Romantic Gesture #FridayFive

Young happy couple with rose, outdoorRomantic gestures are things you do to show your partner that you are thinking about him/her and also a way to show affection. The great thing is that a little goes a long way toward keeping that special connection alive. Thoughtful gestures can even stoke the fire into flames.

1. Touch. It’s easy sometimes to let distance come between us. Make a special effort to hold hands while walking. Give a kiss – a real kiss, not just a peck on the cheek, when saying hello or goodbye. Wake up a few minutes early and engage in a nice morning snuggle.

2. Communicate. Tell your partner how you feel and not just in intimate moments. Write down a heartfelt sentiment. Slip it into a place where it is sure to be found. This can be a post-it on the bathroom mirror or a card in a briefcase. How about sending an intimate text or leaving a suggestive voicemail?

3. Do Something Special. A special or unexpected action can be lovely. You know your significant other’s preferences. Make a special trip to the bakery for that well-loved pie. Cook a favorite meal. Indulge in an activity that your partner enjoys, but maybe you don’t. Do a little pampering by giving a massage.

4. Surprise. There’s nothing like the element of surprise to create a spark. Plan a romantic weekend getaway. Present your partner with a thoughtful gift like a cd of a favorite artist or tickets to a show. Have a picnic.

5. Celebrate. Don’t wait for a holiday or a big promotion. Celebrate today. Make plans to meet for lunch during the week. Break out that special bottle of wine. Make a reservation at a nice restaurant.

I think the theme of these tips is not to settle into a rut. Be mindful. Be considerate. Let your partner know how much you appreciate having him or her in your life in small ways every day.

What’s your favorite romantic gesture?

Malia Mallory Discusses – What is Sensation Play?

His_Desire_Her_Surrender_200x300Sensation play can involve the deprivation of sense imputs such as wearing a blindfold. It can also involve the stimulation of the senses by using feathers or tickling. In His Need, Her Desire, the sensation play is primarily temperature play, the application of hot and cold, though a blindfold is involved too!

Marcus, our hero, utilizes wax and ice to create a series of sensual sensations for his partner, Tabitha. Wax play, like all such activities, needs to be safe, sane and consensual. Different waxes melt at different temperatures, so care must be taken not to burn the recipient. The application of the wax can produce in an artistic result on the skin, particularly if multiple colors are used.

Ice play is often utilized with wax for contrast. Ice can also be uniquely shaped for use. The melting slipperiness can lead to some interesting situations! Ice is often one of the easy entry points into sensation play.

His Need, Her Desire Blurb

Tabitha Quinn didn’t come to Hawaii to be spanked. But when vacationing businessman Marcus Granger saves her from drowning, they begin an affair that moves from the beach to the bedroom and straight into an experience Tabitha’s never had before: dark-haired, blue-eyed Marcus is a dominant, and spanking is just the beginning. The sex is intense, the emotion even more so, until they both must decide if this is a holiday fling or the real thing.

His Need, Her Desire Excerpt

Tabitha’s smile grew wide. She held out her hand. “Really, I can’t thank you enough for your help.”

He held her hand in a firm grasp a shade longer than necessary, but Tabitha didn’t mind. She enjoyed looking at him. Though he had probably shaved that morning, an attractive shadow highlighted his chin and strong jawline.

“I’m glad I was in the right place.”

Tabitha released his hand. “So, where’s your sister?”

“My sister? How did you know?”

Tabitha bit her lip. “I’m sorry to say that I eavesdropped a bit. I was sitting near you at dinner last evening.”

“Eavesdropping? That seems extremely naughty.”

Tabitha was caught off guard by the tone of his voice. He was teasing, and yet, there was a thread of authority running through his words. Tabitha tried to suppress a shiver. “Well, sometimes I just can’t help myself.”

Marcus appeared disarmed by her honesty. “Are you traveling with anyone?”

Tabitha gave him a playful look. “Why do you ask?”

Marcus smiled. “Because I’m interested in knowing the answer, of course.”

“Well, if you’re thinking about ditching my body at sea, I’ve got six family members waiting for me in my hotel room upstairs. If you’re thinking about asking me to dinner, there is no reason why you shouldn’t.” Tabitha amazed herself. Where is this coming from? This man brought something out in her. She’d bet those broad shoulders and sexy smile had enticed many a woman.

He laughed. “You have nothing to worry about. I never use force, unless of course, it is desired.”

“Oh?” The truth burst into her mind. It suddenly became clear that he was fishing around a bit. There had been several hints here and there, but it seemed like he might be looking for a certain sort of woman. No, he couldn’t be. I’m imagining things.

“It’s true. I would be pleased if you joined me for dinner this evening.”

Tabitha did a mental fist pump in her mind. Woohoo! Dinner with Gorgeous Guy. “What did you have in mind?”

“Would you be averse to allowing me to surprise you?”

Tabitha hesitated then plunged ahead. “Not at all. It’s clear you have excellent taste.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow. “What makes you say that?”

“Well, we both dined at the same restaurant last night, and I thought it was terrific.”

“Ah, well, my meal was less than pleasant unfortunately.” His tone indicated the subject was off-limits.

“Perhaps it was the company and not the food?”

Marcus laughed. “You are undoubtedly right and surprisingly honest.”

“My mother would say that my tongue is quicker than my brain.”

The corners of Marcus’s mouth lifted. “I’ve always been a fan of quick tongues.”

Tell your happy ending story!

The Happy Endings Giveaway Hop was organized by Reading Romances!

When I think back, in many ways I’ve had a good many happy endings. After more short relationships than I can count and a couple close calls with marriage, I finally met the man I married. I’ve now been happily married for five years. I’m glad all those others didn’t work out, otherwise, I wouldn’t have what I have now right?

Another happy ending was my daugher. She just turned ten months old. The road to parenthood was long and rocky, but thankfully at the end, my husband and I became the parents of a beautiful little girl.

What is one of your happy endings? – It doesn’t have to be a romance…how about an accomplishment?

Bug-In with Romance Blog H0p – Food Storage

Portrair of person in gas mask. Soldier on warOkay Preppers, it’s time for my entry for the Bug-In with Romance Blog Hop. Should the end be nigh either through hurricane or North Korea, what do you do? Well first, you’ll want romances to read! Well, maybe not first – you probably want to eat, but after the eating, drinking and shelter – maybe you’ll want to read.

I’m going to bring you some information about food storage. We are pretty big on food storage at my house. I’m not talking just about having a stocked pantry or a year’s worth of dried beans. I’m more referring to the fact that we eat packed lunches every day (hot ones) and I often pull out a homemade entrée from the freezer when I don’t feel like cooking. I’m a huge advocate of cooking a bunch and then freezing it, which is how I accomplish these two things without losing my mind.

However, in an emergency scenario, the freezer is probably not the best plan for food storage (unless perhaps you have a generator or are off the grid).

So – what do you do?

Well, you can go the easy route and get a pre-made kit of dehydrated food. Make sure you have the needed water on hand (plus water for drinking) and you are all set. It might be nice to have a way to heat some of the items, but you can get by. You could also have a similar setup with MREs (meals ready to eat). They don’t usually require the extra water.

Another way to go is to stock up on the items yourself. This would include dried items you can rehydrate like beans and things that keep well for long periods at room temperature like meat jerky and dried fruit. Shelf-safe milk in cans or Tetrapaks is very convenient as well. Just don’t forget to rotate a bit now and again.

But what about fresh and prepared items? If you have some notice, bags of ice are great to stock up on. I personally keep a couple of bags of ice in my deep freeze almost all the time. You don’t even have to buy it. You can make your own ice and put in in bags. Ice in a cooler will keep things for a surprisingly long time – especially if you have a quality cooler.

Another option is an evaporative cooler. You can make this yourself with porous ceramic (i.e., a couple large flowerpots). Instructions can be found online.

Lastly, don’t forget to think about foods that we might normally refrigerate that really don’t need it. For example, neither peanut butter nor eggs really need to be refrigerated. Produce like potatoes, onions and carrots can last quite a while in a cool spot. Root vegetables kept in sand or peat moss can last for months without spoilage.

I have really just scratched the surface here. Consider some of the options and what works best for you, and then do a little research. You’ll be prepared for anything in no time.

What do you do to prepare for an emergency?

Finding a New Favorite

I’m a voracious reader. As a result, I’m on a constant quest for new reading material. I primarily read romances, but I do dip into some other genres as well. Therefore, when I come across a new author to enjoy, I’m thrilled.

One such experience happened a few years ago. I came across a novel from author I didn’t know at the time. The novel was To Sir Philip, With Love by Julia Quinn. I read the book and liked it a great deal. The heroine, Eloise, was spunky. The story had humor, romance and sexiness as well. I was delighted to find it was book 5 in a series. What a find!

What authors have you discovered by chance?

Stay tuned for the blurb from my newest release – His Need, Her Desire.

Stay tuned below for an excerpt from my newest release – His Need, Her Desire.

Who Are These Alpha Males?

This blog hop comes at a perfect time for me. I just released a new erotic romance entitled His Need, Her Desire. This gives me the opportunity to introduce you to my hero, Marcus, who is the consummate alpha male. Marcus Granger likes to take charge, not only in the boardroom but in the bedroom as well.

He’s met his match in Tabitha Quinn. She’s feisty, funny and more than a little intrigued by Marcus’s dominant nature.

So what makes Marcus an alpha male? Is it his self-confidence? That certainly helps. Is it his inner strength? That’s a good quality. But what delineates the line between a dominant alpha male and an overbearing, obnoxious oaf?

I believe it is the tempering of the personality. Marcus is not only attracted to Tabitha, he cares for her. He’s considerate and thoughtful in his words and actions toward her. His intent is not to use her, but rather to bring them both pleasure and increase their intimacy. Who could argue with that?

What is a characteristic that you find attractive in an alpha male?

Top Five Hazards of Writing Romance – Malia Mallory Welcomes Guest Suzanne Rock

Welcome Suzanne! This is a great (and unfortunately true!) list of occupational hazards for writers. Don’t miss the blurb for Suzanne’s book Pressure Point.

*****

Every occupation has hazards. For example, construction workers can have things fall on them, police officers can get shot, or scientists could be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Most people don’t think that being a romance writer is dangerous, but the occupation has its own list of hazards, believe me. I know this first-hand because I think I’ve suffered from each of these afflictions at some point in my writing career. Have you?

Hazard #5: Eye Strain

I want to read you email, I really do, but the font is just so…small. Do you really have to use 12pt? 20pt is so much easier on my eyes. Or maybe it was 200% magnification… And bold. All text needs to be bold. Regular font is so damn faint. Ah hell, just tape record your message and send it over. After the hours and hours of reading I need to do for my job, I’ll be lucky if I can see the screen well enough to log into my email account. :p

The best thing to do to alleviate eye strain is to give your eyes rest time. I know it’s easier said than done, but honestly, taking breaks from your work is the best way to prevent doing permanent damage to your eyes.

Hazard #4: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Writers write. And rewrite. And then write some more. What no one tells you is that if you aren’t writing in an position that is ergonomic, you can put a lot of strain on your fingers, wrists and arms. I learned this first hand when I got carpal tunnel syndrome after writing the last Ecstasy Spa story. Let me tell you, it’s not fun. So painful. The only thing that can cure it is to stop typing all together and let me tell you, that’s almost impossible for a writer. I’d almost rather get nerve damage, lol. Lucky for me, technology has come to the rescue. I’ll be trying out some new speech-to-text software to help cut down on my typing. I’ll let you know how it turns out. There are also ergonomic wrist rests that help to alleviate this ailment. In short, make sure that you aren’t putting too much strain on your fingers and wrists. We make a lot of sacrifices for our art, but nerve damage shouldn’t be one of them.

Hazard #3: Writer’s Butt

Ugh. Just ugh. Writers write and to do this, you need to sit. And sit. And sit. We sit for days on end without moving…well, we do move. We all move to the kitchen to get a snack. :/ All of that inactivity can lead to a lot of cush in the tush. As writers we need to remember that frequent breaks are just as important as getting those words in. Standing up and walking around periodically can do a lot to help keep our butts from growing up to three times their normal size.

Hazard #2: Living in a Fantasy World

This is almost a given. Writers love to think about their writing. We daydream about plot, setting and characters twenty-four hours a day. Unfortunately, all of this time in our fantasy world can leave us with a warped view on reality. “What do you mean, you don’t have fangs? Doesn’t everyone have fangs now-a-days?” You writers know what I mean. Your characters become more real than your family, and this could lead to some interesting conversations. J To help with this, set a timer for periodic intervals. When it goes off, remind yourself that you do indeed exist in a real word with real people who depend on you. Kids need to be fed, dogs needs to be walked. It’s best if you interact with the people around you before things get too out of control.

Hazard #1: (And the most dangerous, IMHO) Man-titty Fatigue

As romance writers, we are constantly bombarded with sexy images. Topless men, couples in the passionate embrace, sexy models with that intense “come hither” stare. To a woman first introduced to this world, it’s a dream come true. Men? Hell yes! But after a few months, er, years, things start to blend together. Features that thrilled you three years ago don’t have the same allure. The models look too young, or too scruffy, or too…something. Faces blend together until you have a difficult time telling the men apart. This is especially true for the indy writer, who needs to go through countless stock photos to find the right one for their book cover. In this case, it’s good to take a step back and not look at pictures for a few days. During this detox stage, remember what it is you find sexy about men and rediscover your love for the opposite sex. Hopefully some time away will help you to rediscover what so many other women are drooling over.

So, there you have it, my top five working hazards of the romance writer. Do you suffer from any of them? Tell me about it in the comments section. I’d love to hear from you!

A lighter clicked and Tabitha smelled the faint whiff of burning. She heard rustling and wished desperately to know what Marcus was doing. Something hot landed on the skin just above her breast. It burned for a second and then the heat dissipated. Wax. Was it wax?
