Why Read an eBook?

I still buy real books. I do. I admit it. However, I do mostly buy eBooks now. I have a Kindle…but honestly, I read mostly on my phone. There are so many reasons I’ve made the switch.

For one, my bookcases are full to overflowing. As I sit here in this room typing, there are four large bookcases stuffed with books. That is just in this room. There are bookcases in the other bedroom, the living room AND the dining room. There are books in plastic storage containers under my bed and in my closet. There are crates full of books all over my home. I have … a lot of books. I just don’t physically have the room for more.

However, there are other good reasons too. I have a number of cookbooks in electronic format. It is great to look up ingredients I need while I’m at the store. If I’m stuck in line at the post office, I just whip out the phone and do some reading. I have reference materials at my fingertips. Lastly, the selection online is much better. When I moved to this town, there were two real book stores. There was a Waldenbooks in the mall and a stand-alone Borders. Both are now gone. The only places to buy books are Walmart, Target and the grocery store. No offense, but the selection is quite limited.

Did I switch to eBooks to save trees? Not specifically. I do other things … cutting down on packaging, recycling (even though it isn’t required where I live), buying in bulk, bringing my own bags etc. However, I’m a happy ebook convert. If trees get saved, that’s a nice bonus.

I’m not up for the shopping crush this year, so I have some suggestions for making your day a happy one without shopping.

1.  Don’t Go Shopping.  This is self-explanatory. Unless you want your sexy time to consist of rubbing up against strangers while standing in long lines for items that are probably out of stock, consider alternatives.

2.  Load Up On Sexy Reads.  This is a kind of shopping I can get into! Many promos are going on. Check out titles on Amazon and AllRomance Books in particular. You might get some inspiring ideas for #4 below. (If I may be so bold, consider my new release His Need, Her Desire - see blurb below).

3.  Eat Yummy Thanksgiving Leftovers.  After all the hard work that goes into the preparation of the Thanksgiving Feast, one of the best benefits is getting to eat it all over again without the work.

4.  Spend Quality Time with Your Main Squeeze.  Many people are off work today. Now is a great time to catch up on a little sleep and a little reading (see #2 above). After you are inspired, take your significant other behind closed doors for some “special” quality time.

5.  Spend Time with Family. Today is a great day for family. Whether you want to watch football, watch movies or play video games, there are many fun activities for all ages to enjoy. If it isn’t too cold out, consider a physical activity like touch football on the lawn. Nothing encourages togetherness like . . . well – togetherness!

Hi Malia – Thanks so much for having me!

When I first started playing around with the idea for Tight Spaces, I had no intentions of actually doing anything with it. See, I’m a Paranormal Romance writer, and, although my paranormals are steamy, the plots are generally more complex than most of the contemporaries I’ve read. When a couple has four separate factions trying to keep them apart, and at least two of those factions would prefer them dead, there isn’t much time for flirting or going dancing.

As I finished edits on Safe Heart: Blood Dragon I (the Paranormal I plan to release on November 1), I found myself with several chapters worth of scenes that suddenly had no book. It seemed a shame to let them sit there and collect dust on my hard drive. So, I read back through them, preparing to use parts of them for a Paranormal short story I’d been thinking of.

Except, the chapters didn’t have a great deal of paranormal content. Developing characters and story line and plot would take a good bit of work, and time I didn’t have. So, I shelved the idea for a few days.

Then my Critique Partner and bestie, Azure Boone (
http://www.azureboone.com
) and I were talking one day, about a contemporary Erotic Romance she’d just started working on. The conversation evolved and she ended up suggesting I do something contemporary.

From there, it was pretty simple to add to those deleted chapters and scenes, rewriting them, into a contemporary Erotic Romance novella. In the midst of deciding on specific details for the story, it seemed natural to develop those details to fit a series. And the Double Dare Club was born.

The Double Dare Club is the nightclub the bulk of Tight Spaces takes place in. The other stories in the series will be connected with the nightclub in some way. One of the couple might work there, or they could meet in a fender bender in the street out front.

To celebrate the release of Tight Spaces, I’m giving away some copies of the novella, a $10 Amazon Gift Card, and I’m working on some other things, but I don’t have confirmation on those yet. To read an excerpt, enter the giveaway, and find out more about the Double Dare Club, stop by
http://kenradaniels.com/double-dare
for more information.

Oh, and while you’re at my site, check out the new page for Archangel’s Creed to get a sneak peek at the project Azure Boone and I are working on.

Malia, thanks again for having me here! I look forward to having you visit my blog again!

Double Dare Club Club – Tight Spaces Blurb

A lonely woman goes dancing with friends to kick the Bad Breakup Anniversary Blues. Her fantasy-man is willing to help, until her lowlife ex ambushes him.

With the first anniversary of the messy break up of a long-term relationship bearing down, Amy has the blues. When her friends suggest an evening at the Double Dare, she reluctantly agrees to go along. She doesn’t do the casual sex thing, but it’ll be good to spend time with her friends.

Seeing Jesse at the Double Dare immediately cheers her up. She’s fantasized over him for months. The evening gets more pleasant as they heat up the dance floor. Things go from hot to sizzling, until her ex shows up and confronts Amy in a low blow. Will his interference deter Jesse and Amy from continuing what could be the start of something wonderful?

Double Dare Club: Tight Spaces Excerpt

Finally, the doors opened, and the line started to move. The doorman checked IDs, turning away one young couple with fakes. By the time Amy made it to the front of the line, the heavily muscled man had relaxed a little, and started flirting with some of the women in the line. When Amy’s turn came, he gave her a nod while his blue gaze flicked up and down, taking in her appearance.

His smile broadened when his gaze arrived at her generous breasts. “That’s an awfully nice dress for a dump like this, Sweetheart.” His voice, rumbly and intimate, sent a charge directly to Amy’s pussy.

She licked her lips before answering, causing heat to flare in his eyes. “It’s my favorite, so I decided what the hell.”

“If you get tired of the jerks inside, come on back out and keep me company a while. I know how to treat a lady.” His voice promised a good time.

Feeling especially daring, Amy made of point of letting her skirt brush against his pant leg as she walked past. “I’ll just bet you do.” With a long look over her shoulder, she headed on through the heavy steel door.

God! Had she really done that? Embarrassment heated her cheeks. Never in her life had she behaved that way! Every male without sight would read her actions as coming from a bitch in heat. Hopefully those young jerks hadn’t paid attention. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to resist paying her a visit.

Black Friday Blog Hop-So You Want to Buy an eReader

Welcome to our Black Friday blog hop! See below for the huge list of prizes!

One random commenter (can be on any of the blogs) will win a Kindle Fire! Other prizes will also be awarded (listed below). That’s the easiest kind of shopping I can think of…

——–

eReaders are no longer in the realm of a techie gadget. They’ve gone mainstream. Even my mother has an eReader. This year, with the launch of the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble, there are more choices than ever.

I personally have a Kindle, an iPod touch and an iPad.  I read on all of them. I will admit though to being quite partial to the iPod touch because it fits in my pocket. I find the iPad a little heavy and now that I’m used to a touch screen, I keep trying to touch my Kindle to make it do things and well, that doesn’t work on my model.

If you haven’t gotten an eReader yet and are in the market, what do you do? How do you choose with so many?  There are many factors to consider. Do you want a unitasker? That is to say, do you want to be able to do something besides read books? Do you want to listen to music, watch movies or use applications? Maybe you already have those bases covered.

Cost is also another consideration. You would never buy an iPad for just reading books. That is serious overkill not to mention expensive. You can get a budget Kindle for $79 while the least powerful iPad is hitting $500. This doesn’t even consider the Sony eReader or the Kobo Vox, which while good choices, could be a bit more limiting in content than a Kindle or Nook. However, if you are outside the United States, the Kobo might be a choice worth considering as they are bigger in foreign markets and set to continue expanding.

Dedicated eReaders hold a great deal of material. They also tend to be the best suited for reading with special screens made just for that purpose. They also hold a charge for a very long time. These are all good reasons to consider a no-frills eReader if it meets your needs.

This holiday season, buyers have been presented with even more choices. We now have something between the dedicated eReader and a higher end device like an iPad. We have the Kindle Fire from Amazon and the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet. The Kindle Fire retails for $199 with a seven inch color touchscreen. The new Nook Tablet is a bit more at $249. Both run Android OS. The Nook Tablet has a longer battery life and advertises more memory at 16GB. The Kindle Fire has 8GB. The Nook can be expanded with an SD card.

However, though the Nook seems to have more space, it only allows 1GB to be used for non-purchased content. That would mean if you want to transfer more than one movie or quite a bit of music, you would need the SD card.

The Kindle Fire allows utilization of Amazon’s cloud service for music, movies etc. Barnes & Noble went another way, partnering with Netflix and others to provide content.

So, if you are buying and eReader for yourself or someone else this holiday season, you have a lot of choices at a variety of price points. The time has never been better to pick up that long-wanted eReader.
